Depression is a complex and challenging journey that many individuals encounter. On the surface, everything may seem perfectly fine—smiles, laughter, and a sense of normalcy often prevail.

From my own experience, I know how overwhelming the weight of emotional pain can be. This internal battle is often difficult for those around us to understand, and many of us wrestle with achieving closure from past traumas.

One common sign of a troubled mind is withdrawal from activities that were once enjoyed. People may stop socializing in the way they used to. If you notice anyone displaying similar behavior, please approach them with empathy and encourage them to reach out to a mental health professional.

Seeking help from a mental health expert provides valuable support and guidance in navigating these difficult emotions. Remember, you are not alone in this journey; there is always hope for healing and recovery.

My Journey with Mental Hygiene in the Workplace

First, let's explore the meaning of mental hygiene in the workplace. Just as physical hygiene emphasizes cleanliness and health practices, mental hygiene prioritizes creating a positive psychological environment.

Fostering such an environment not only supports employee well-being but also significantly reduces stress and elevates productivity. Embracing mental hygiene is essential for cultivating a thriving workplace culture.

As the cornerstone of my advertising agency, I have encountered many challenges in maintaining a healthy work-life balance. During the past several years in the advertising profession, I have struggled repeatedly to keep my composure. I often felt like I was swinging like a pendulum between client urgencies and agency deadlines. And trust me, this journey has not been easy.

However, I've come to realize that if I felt overwhelmed, my employees and colleagues were likely experiencing similar pressures. To create harmony for myself and my team, I established some guidelines in the workplace to promote a positive mindset.

    • Established Boundaries: I no longer accept client briefs after work hours, and I discourage my team from communicating about work during those hours as well.
    • Created Flexible Workhours: I implemented flexible work hours for my team, allowing them the freedom to work at their own pace and during the hours when they feel most productive. This approach has encouraged team members to complete their tasks with greater creativity and enthusiasm.
    • Encouraged Breaks: I've encouraged my team to take regular short breaks during work hours to rest, stretch, and recharge, which has helped them reduce mental fatigue.
    • Streamlined Workload Management: I've ensured that workloads are realistic and manageable so that everyone feels comfortable. Establishing clear expectations and properly delegating tasks have contributed to a more relaxed environment.
    • Initiated Empathy and Open Communication: I've implemented active listening and empathy practices that encourage team members and support staff to share their personal and professional challenges. This creates a supportive environment where mental well-being is prioritized.
    • Recognized and Appreciated Efforts: I consistently recognize and appreciate my team members' hard work, which boosts morale and promotes positive mental health by fostering a sense of accomplishment.
    • Promoted Respect and Inclusivity: I encourage mutual respect and understanding amongst my team to prevent toxic behavior such as harassment or discrimination.
    • Encouraged Social Connections: I cultivate relationships through engaging team-building exercises, lively social gatherings, or collaborative meetings. These activities alleviate feelings of isolation and significantly enhance emotional well-being.
    • Fostered Personal Development and Growth: I strive to provide my team with the tools and opportunities for skill enhancement, helping them feel valued and giving them a sense of control over their work, which fosters confidence and mental well-being.
    • Established Pet-Friendly Office Culture - As someone who loves pets, I make sure our office is welcoming for both stray animals and my team’s pets.
I have achieved all of this because I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with incredibly passionate, empathetic, and enthusiastic Industry Leaders from various fields, as well as my invaluable life mentors and colleagues!
